What is a drone roof survey? How it will save you money and provide total coverage.
There are several motivations for wishing to have a roof inspection or roof survey performed. We have come across several private and commercial clients with different underlying motivations for our services. Prior to issuing a quote there are a number of factors we have to consider. This article covers the factors that determine roof inspection pricing. Some motivations include:
Identify source of roof leak or blocked gutters
Get more info on older properties and hidden concerns
Document any damage for claim and repair quotes
Document new or repair work that has failed
Identify missing insulation or thermal bridging for Passivhaus
Check for damage visually or with thermal camera
Prior to our drone inspection work physically taking place our preparations can be anything from an hour to several days. A simple private home may take less than an hour to perform a risk assess assessment. Working with large organisations such as government or universities can be a long process requiring weeks of planning emails and authorisation checks. Part of risk assessment may include the requirement to use drone observers (a second pair of eyes for the pilot) and spotters (staff to direct the public). We may also need to set up a take-off and landing area using cones or barriers in busy areas for safe operations. The quoted price may include time of multiple staff members on the day.
Fault, insurance, warranty, survey determines the level of detail
Larger size and complexity can take additional time
Large organisations can require extensive planning
Busy public areas require additional marshals
Authorisation is required from nearby airports and aerodromes to fly a drone
Before leaving site captured images are reviewed
We discern between a roof inspection and survey by coverage. Usually a roof inspection seeks a specific goal and is more limited in scope. In general when we issue a roof inspection we are looking for a specific defect lead by the client for example checking for blocked gutters, missing tiles or damage from a falling chimney pot. Our definition of a roof survey is to make a more systematic coverage of roof areas. There is some disagreement over the use of the word ‘survey’ in a professional context. Again, this all aligns with the underlying motivation. We have select network of RICS chartered surveyors to compile our professional reports. These would be some large value residential and commercial property sales, insurance or warranty claims. We are always upfront with potential clients what we can provide.
Our drone roof surveys create dozens to hundreds of high quality images for review. This is done back at the office and for a basic inspection any relevant images based on customer needs are uploaded to the cloud and the customer emailed a link to review them digitally. For professional surveys these images are passed on to our chartered surveyor for review and reporting.
Preventative roof maintenance is where inspections are carried out routinely every year. Doing so can assist at finding faults before they escalate a bit like a roof MOT. If you choose to become a regular client we can provide a discount for a low cost roof survey. Since we have your site risk assessment on file we do not have to recharge for this part of the service and are happy to pass on that saving to you. We also offer a three year price promise so you know what you are paying. There is no contract or obligation and the discount carries after the first year.
Drone roof inspections are considerably cheaper than traditional methods with powered platforms or scaffolding. However, if your problem is trivial it’s worth remembering most Edinburgh roofing companies will offer a free inspection before they quote for the repair. In cases where your still inside your insurance excess this may be more cost effective.
Our operators can perform a drone roof inspection of a small to medium property in around 30 minutes. For your piece of mind we are accredited by the CAA for safe use of drones via an Operational Authorisation. Our operations are also insured to £5 Million of public liability cover. On completion of the inspection we can provide you with the images via an email link. It’s your choice if you require a full set of images or just the highlights. We can also provide a digital report or provide a full survey via one of our surveying partners both for an additional fee we will quote ahead of any work.
How It Works? Just fill out the contact form below with you name, email, phone number and requirements. Most importantly please provide your full address or link to a map pin. We require this information to plan a safe flight. We can still fly near airports but require additional time to gain authorisation. Ahead of the day please make any family members or neighbours aware a drone inspection will be taking place. Some people are naturally wary given the bad press drones receive. On the day one of our operators will first meet you and go over any of your concerns.
Based on your supplied information and requirements
Convenient date and time arranged

These will be sent via an email link. Full reports if requested issued within 48 hours
Residential property roofing tends to be small to medium but the layout can be more complicated on larger detached properties. Aside from direct damage problems can also arise for nesting birds, vegetation growth and blocked gutters. Our pricing is determined by the size of property, the type of building, access, location and proximity to no fly zones such as airports and stadiums. Generally under the 2020 drone regulation review we can fly a small drone most places.
